The Many Benefits of GPS
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds throughout the years. Whereas before, the telephone was the best way to communicate with a loved one, today, VoIP with video makes the experience even more personal. Whereas before, video recorders were a must so as not to miss our favorite television shows, today, TiVo allows us to record two or more shows beamed simultaneously. And whereas before, delivering the longitude and latitude of an object was the only way to locate it in a given area, today Global Positioning System has provided a more convenient tracking process for appropriate applications.

Indeed, GPS has completely revolutionized so many industries and necessities. With the three-dimensional positioning reports that GPS can provide via satellite-based radio positioning systems, this technology has given new meaning to the phrase “keeping in touch wherever you may be.” With this technology, any corresponding subject can be located, regardless of where such subject may be found on the globe.

But tracking is not the only benefit that can be derived from this technology. Here are the other advantages made possible by this amazing breakthrough:

* With GPS, it would be easier to map certain areas in the world. There would be no need to send out a team and scout the area while airborne. GPS technology can provide readout and eventually, a printout of the terrain that is to be mapped.

* GPS also makes possible the automation of certain processes. Ships and other carriers, and even simple vehicles like farm tractors, can now be programmed to hook up with a GPS system for automatic navigation to a desired destination. The GPS device would serve as the captain as well as the map reader of the expedition.

* GPS is also very helpful in locating lost vessels, especially those which are lost at sea. With the wide expanse of water in the world, it would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible, to find missing ships or planes.

* This positioning system also strengthens the military’s defense capabilities. Incoming entities may be determined from thousands of miles away. Troop movements can be monitored to see if they would present a threat to the nation. And in the unfortunate event of war, GPS would prove to be an essential tool in determining the enemy’s more important installations.

With all the wonders that GPS technology has brought to the fold, it is safe to say that it is one of the most relevant introductions of new technology in the last century.
